ANISH KAPOOR PAVILION

Made of stainless steel, the piece has a lacquered surface that changes colour as the viewer moves across it. The title of the disc expresses how the palette of the 140 x 140 x 18 cm disc changes from “Spanish gold to Magneta satin”. Kapoor has been producing similar of his signature disks at different ratios and scales since the mid-1990s as a way to experiment with depth, at times making the surfaces reflective or infusing them with gradations of colour.

MATERIALS, FORM AND STRUCTURE

The discs made by kapoor are meant to disorient the viewer, from afar you are able to recognize its shape and concave form, however, as you get closer to them they appear to be a flattened surface which changes your perception on how much distance there is between you and the object. Kapoor’s sculptures interact directly with the viewer and the human perception of things. He uses the mix of materials along with the colors to structure a figure that we may think we can easily recognize, but the more we look at it we notice it could be something else. Kapoor intends for these concave discs to trigger optical trickery as you move closer and engage with the artwork to obtain the distortion of reality through the manipulation of light and space.
